Dependence

The state of being determined, influenced, or controlled by something else.
A compulsive or chronic need; an addiction: an alcohol dependence.

I realized how utterly crazy my dependence on the computer is today. Dave called and said "I think the harddrive on the laptop crashed." Now, for a computer geek to say this means it's bad. Oh shit. What the hell am I going to do? Not because I need to use it for new things, but because my PICTURES are all on that damn laptop. I download them from my camera. And I take a LOT of pictures. My cats, my family, huge pieces of hail, whatever. He said he turned it off and was letting it rest and hopefully it would boot up when he tried later. So when I got home from babysitting, I didn't go near it. We have 2 other computers, so I had others to use. I just needed my pictures from that one. When he got home, he tried with no success. Seriously people, I was SAD. To the point of tears. I ran to my room. By some great miracle, if you take the harddrive out of the computer, blow on it, shake it a little, and make sure Scott is on the other end of the phone, it will work. It did, and I was able to copy all my photos (Over 1GB of them) onto our flash drive and transfer them to another computer. I think I'm going to clean up my pictures and burn them to discs, just in case. That was scary.

So if someone that isn't a computer geek tells you your harddrive has crashed does it NOT suck?

I think having Scott on the other end of the phone is what does the trick. Computers can sense fear, but if they know that a real geek is watching, they will behave better.

it doesn't suck AS MUCH, because they might not know what they're talking about. that's all. it wont suck BAD until a computer geek can tell me that yes, it's screwed!

computers must be about the only things afraid of scott....
